This year’s NBA trade deadline might go down as one of the most effective in history, because nearly every team that made a move seemed to achieve what it set out to do. Last week leading up to Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET deadline, 28 trades were completed; tying a league record. 27 teams got involved in deals in some fashion, underlining just how active this deadline was.

The clearest shift came mid-week when the LA Clippers sent James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Darius Garland and a draft pick; a move that instantly reshaped the Eastern Conference playoff picture challenging the Celtics being the frontrunners. In the ‘25-’26 season, Harden has averaged 25.4 points and 8.1 assists, compared to Garland averaging 18 points and 6.9 assists. Cleveland, already in the postseason hunt, upgraded its backcourt with a proven scorer and playmaker. Meanwhile, Dallas pivoted dramatically, trading Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards, a deal that loaded Washington with talent and draft assets while signaling Dallas’s focus to their star rookie, Cooper Flagg.

Other notable moves, like Jaren Jackson Jr. going to Utah and smaller but strategic additions by teams like Minnesota and Indiana, showed that contenders and rebuilders alike were aggressive and purposeful. Ivica Zubac went to the Pacers, gaining a highly effective pick and roll scorer. Ayo Dosunmu went to the Bucks which is giving them a much needed floor general. Even star players Giannis Antetokounmpo and Ja Morant stayed put, sparking conversation just as much as the deals themselves.

This deadline was one of balance and opportunism.
